Principal's Message

Welcome to General Vanier Public School!

I am honoured and privileged to have this opportunity to introduce myself and share my enthusiasm about being your school’s Principal. Before coming to General Vanier, I was the Vice Principal at Blossom Park Public School. The first 12 years of my teaching career was in Toronto before moving to Ottawa in 2005. I have taught in all three divisions (primary, junior and intermediate) as well as in Special Education and as an Instructional Coach for both school boards.

This September General Vanier not only welcomes a new Principal and students (e.g., Year 1/JK students) we are also welcoming some new staff members. Laurie Burns joins our Kindergarten team and will be teaching the English program to Year 1 and 2 students. Shamela Nazri also joins the Kindergarten team as an Early Childhood Educator (ECE). Samantha Ellis is a Long Term Occasional Teacher filling a vacancy for a Kindergarten French Teacher until the end of September. Kelly Toxopeus also joins the Kindergarten team as one of the English teachers. Yanek Lewkowicz-Lalonde will be teaching one of our grade 2 classes until Jenna Sirko returns from her maternity leave. Lastly, Ali Al Hussaini, an Educational Assistant will be with us this year. I know you will join me as we welcome them to the General Vanier Team!

I believe that student well-being and academic achievement are mutually supportive. When students feel safe, welcome and included they are better learners. As educational researcher Alfie Kohn states, “If children feel safe, they can take risks, ask questions, make mistakes, learn to trust, share their feelings, and grow.” When parents and the school community work in partnership, a safe, inclusive and welcoming learning environment is created for our children. I look forward to building these strong partnerships with you to support the learning of all our students.

I am so grateful for your support and look forward to meeting you and your children as we work together to foster the development of respectful, caring, responsible, and self-directed learners.

Sincerely,

Christina Rathier
