October, 2019

The leaves are falling and the weather is changing! The students and staff have been busy filling their days with learning and fun activities this month.

What’s Happening at School?

Every October Islamic Heritage Month is recognized in Canada. This is an opportunity to learn about the history and culture of Ontarians of Muslim heritage, as well as to appreciate the significant contributions made by the Islamic community. This year’s Islamic Heritage Month poster pays homage to the contributions of Muslim visionaries who have propelled humanity forward. We would like to invite all families to check out this poster in our foyer, as well as share what Islamic Heritage Month means to them. Dance Club is for students in grade 1, 2 and 3. Each week the students will learn new dance moves, exercise and have fun! All part of a healthy lifestyle! Families will be invited to see two dance performances...dates will be announced soon!

At the beginning of the month, all students participated in a bus safety presentation and met Buster the bus. They learned about sitting safely in their seats (backpacks on their laps and backs touching the seat) and how to evacuate the bus safely during an emergency. A reminder to all parents who have children taking the bus...kindergarten students must be delivered to and picked up from the bus stop. Drivers will not allow students to board or exit the bus if an adult is not with them. Bus drivers do important work, please remind your children to be safe on the bus as well as kind and respectful with their drivers to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the bus. October is also Cyber Security Awareness month. The following link will provide you with more information Cyber Security Awareness Month.

Keeping our classrooms tidy and properly recycling our nutrition break items is an important job which Mr. Brady (Lead Custodian) and Miss. Izzy (Evening Custodian) help us with each day. To honour the work the students do, Mr. Brady and Miss. Izzy recognize one class each month that did an outstanding job keeping their classroom tidy and being top notch with their recycling skills. For the month of September, Mr. Lalonde’s Grade 2 classroom received the award! The trophy (Donated and created by Mr. Brady) is displayed in the front foyer display case.

On the October 11th PA Day, school-based staff participated in a learning program through the Canadian Centre for Child Protection’s Commit to Kids program. Teachers spent the afternoon learning about math instruction that will support your child’s mathematical thinking. On October 16th, your school council committee met for their monthly meeting. In the coming weeks, there will be two garden towers operating in our school (one in the front foyer and one in the library). These towers are going to support our students knowledge around plant life and caring for our environment. Our thanks to school council for their support in getting these towers and maintaining their use! October 31st is Halloween and students will be wearing their costumes to school. We will have an assembly in the gym on Thursday to recognize students who demonstrated perseverance during the month of October. It will be a regular instructional school day and parents are asked to ensure students do not wear face masks or bring toy weapons that may accompany costumes to school. Thank you!

Coming in November…

School Council is organizing a used book sale that will take place during parent-teacher interviews on the evening of November 14th and the morning of November 15th. Students are encouraged to bring in gently used books for the next couple of weeks. Bins will be placed in the front foyer for collection. The proceeds will be used to contribute to school fundraising initiatives.

Progress Reports/Communication of Learning: Initial Observations (Kindergarten) will be coming home on November 7th. An opportunity to discuss your child’s progress will be provided on the evening of November 14th and in the morning of November 15th (No School for Students), please watch for interview schedule information coming home with your child.

November 11th is Remembrance Day and General Vanier will be having it’s ceremony on the 11th. Parents are invited to attend the ceremony (details will be shared closer to the date) and are reminded that this is a solemn ceremony where we honour and remember those who fought for our freedom.
