Measures of Student Achievement and Success

Our school follows the guidelines set out in the OCDSB Policy and Procedures for Student Evaluation, available on the Board's website.
Staff at General Vanier use ongoing assessment to inform teaching and learning. Some of our assessments include:
• PM Benchmarks, Empower Reading Assessments, Formal and Informal Assessments
• Teacher moderation of student work samples to identify progress and next steps
• An Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) province-wide assessment is administered to all students in Grade 3 during the spring term.
• Our support team meets every 6 weeks to identify student needs and to adjust our support accordingly. We hold weekly referral meetings to discuss students in need. We have three multi-disciplinary meetings each year to create plans for assessment and application to system classes for student’s with demonstrated profiles of need.

School Improvement Plans and Initiatives

The development of mathematics and writing skills are the focus of our school improvement plan at General Vanier Public School. We review school priorities annually with the School Council and work cooperatively to set new goals that are aligned with the Board Improvement Plan. An analysis of our Grade 3 EQAO results, daily observation of student performance, writing conferences, report card marks and a variety of demographic factors are all considered in the development of our School Improvement Plan.

Literacy:

We have studied the work of Lucy West who encourages a focus on our students’ abilities to use critical thinking skills in all curriculum areas. Students are encouraged to use accountable talk when responding to texts through the use of strategies such as “Think, Pair, Share”. During writing conferences, our young writers learn to identify their strengths and focus on a next step to improve their written skills. Students received timely and descriptive feedback to extend their understanding of writing.

Numeracy:

To improve performance in Mathematics our focus remains on 3 Step Problem-Solving with an emphasis on expressing student thinking using words and pictures. Teacher moderation of student work has sharpened our focus student achievement and next steps in programming and support.

OFIP Tutors and Tutors in the Classroom:

This year we once again have received Ministry funding to support Literacy and Mathematics. Students will work in small groups with a tutor to build literacy and numeracy skills. We have a tutor from the Tutors in the Classrooms Program.

School Climate/Parental Involvement:

Our monthly character assemblies reinforce our work with students on our “How full is your Bucket” program. Students, staff, and parents strive to fill buckets daily. A few students, staff, and community members are highlighted each month for the fine efforts they have demonstrated in filling our buckets.
